Introduction
Preparing for unexpected incidents is part of all business’s security posture to mitigate data risks. Last Friday’s worldwide data outage was a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities inherent in our interconnected digital world. The incident began in the early hours of Thursday night, and I was alerted to a critical issue at one of my client’s offices. This incident is the story of that night and the lessons learned.
The Initial Alert
At 3 AM on Thursday night, I received an urgent message from a client. Their entire network of PCs had gone down, with every screen displaying the infamous blue screen of death. This immediate and widespread system failure indicated a severe problem, likely affecting their network and potentially linked to a more significant, systemic issue. The situation’s urgency was palpable, and the gravity of the potential impact was apparent.
Another client operating in the financial sector reported a complete failure of their security camera network. The client reported that their PCs displayed the blue screen of death and disrupted critical security infrastructure.
